Community-led recovery project in Sunnynook Catchment

Background

Following the extreme weather events of early 2023, many areas in Tāmaki Makaurau were impacted, including the Sunnynook catchment (Sunnynook, Tōtara Vale, Forrest Hill). A community working group was established to support coordinated recovery efforts in the catchment. A key part of this work is community-led recovery planning, which supports local people to prioritise actions, identify needs, and support one another.

This plan is based on feedback from local residents and community members gathered during workshops and conversations. We’re calling it the Sunnynook PACT as it outlines ideas under: People, Action, and Communication, all with the hope of generating increased Trust in the Sunnynook Catchment.

Community Think (a community development collective) partnered with the local community working group to run the community engagement process from March 2025 to August 2025.

Project Outcomes:

  • Identify recovery priorities within the Sunnynook catchment.
  • Test and refine these priorities with the Sunnynook community.
  • Design recovery strategies in collaboration with the Sunnynook catchment.
  • Support the Sunnynook community in implementing their recovery plan.
